How to Use a Motta 58 mm Adjustable Leveling Tool

The Motta leveling tool helps create a flat, evenly distributed coffee bed before tamping, improving extraction consistency and reducing channeling.

Step 1: Fill the Portafilter

Dose your desired amount of ground coffee into the portafilter basket.

Step 2: Adjust the Tool Height

Rotate the base of the leveling tool to set the desired distribution depth. A shallower setting works well for lower doses, while a deeper setting may be needed for higher doses.

Step 3: Place the Tool on the Coffee Grounds

Set the leveling tool flat on top of the coffee bed. The tool should rest evenly on the basket rim.

Step 4: Rotate the Tool

Apply light downward pressure and rotate the tool 2–4 times. The stainless steel distribution blades will sweep through the grounds, creating a smooth, level surface.

Step 5: Inspect the Coffee Bed

The coffee should appear evenly distributed with a flat, uniform surface.

Step 6: Tamp the Coffee

Remove the leveling tool and use a 58 mm tamper to compress the coffee puck with firm, even pressure.

Step 7: Brew Your Espresso

Lock the portafilter into your espresso machine and begin extraction.
