Which tamper size fits my espresso machine?

Measure the inside diameter of your filter basket at the top and choose the tamper closest to it, with only a fraction of a millimeter of clearance. Common sizes:

  • 58 mm: the commercial standard, used by most E61-group and prosumer machines
  • 58.4 mm (Competition): a tighter fit for precision and competition baskets, with less coffee left at the edges
  • 57 mm and 53 mm: for machines with slightly smaller groups. Check your basket before you buy.
  • 54 mm: Breville/Sage Barista Express, Barista Pro and Bambino-style portafilters
  • 51 mm: many De'Longhi pump machines and the Breville 800 series

Flat or convex base?

A flat base compresses the coffee bed evenly from edge to edge. It's the choice of most specialty baristas and the easiest to keep level. A convex base pushes slightly more at the center and less at the edges, which some baristas use to reduce edge channeling. Read our guide on how to tamp espresso properly.

Complete your tamping station

Add a coffee leveling tool to distribute the grounds before you tamp, and a tamping mat or wood tamper holder to protect your counter and portafilter.

Frequently asked questions

How hard should I tamp espresso?

Firmly and consistently. About 15–20 kg (30–45 lb) of pressure is plenty. Keeping the tamp level matters far more than pressing harder.

What is a competition tamper?

A tamper machined to a tighter tolerance, such as 58.4 mm instead of 58 mm, so it fits precision baskets edge to edge and leaves fewer loose grounds around the rim.

Are Motta tampers made in Italy?

Yes. Motta tampers are made in Italy by Metallurgica Motta, with stainless steel bases and wood or colored handles.
